View Full Version : Steering a Submarine

There is something I've wondered about Full-scale Subs.
In modern Subs, Is there a way to 'bank' in a sharp turn, like in aircraft, or can turns only be done in a flat skid?
Or can they even be turned fast enough to produce a Skid?
I assume sharp turns are not usually required but I'd think they would be sometime?

Limiting this discussion to combatants:

With the exception of the modern SEAWOLF, VIRGINIA, and some modern European boats, no, there are no active roll control surfaces (but there are fixed roll control stabilizers -- the American 'anhedrals' come to mind).

Anyone want to challenge these assertions?

The inboard bank in a turn is an artifact of the sails position and forces that structure creates as the angle of attach increases about the yaw axis. Looks neat but is a ship control problem which can mature (as a consequence of 'vortex shedding') into a nasty 'snap-roll'. A very bad, 'depth excursion' can result.

Thanks for the Info, David

Wow, snap-roll a Sub! I don't think I'd want to be onboard during that!

David,

'Anhedrals' are horizontal surfaces that angle down at outer tips, correct?

Yup. Here you can see them on my trumpter seawolf.

Ah okay, they are about half way between horizontal and vertical, on that sub anyway?

Do these anhedrals on RC boats exert the same effects as those on real boats?

Speaking of yank and bank...

Have had enormous amounts of fun driving my Alfa in olympic pools at high speed. Throw in some rudder - she rolls a little into the turn , next add some up rear planes - boy does shes kick through the turn. The closest thing I have had to flying a fighter jet underwater...a fun boat all round.

A member named SNOWTANK on another forum is building a RC Caswell Conversion Seaview and asked this question about the bow planes of this peculiar design....
"I wonder if the fins could be used like a jet aircraft 's flaps where one is down and one is up to allow steep turns. "

What do you think Mr Merriman?

I don't know about steep-turns but it should do some great Snap-rolls.
